Disentangling Mechanisms in Natural Toxin Sorption to Soil Organic Carbon

چکیده

Natural toxins are multifunctional, often ionizable organic compounds increasingly detected in the environment. Surprisingly little is known about their interactions with soil carbon, although sorption largely controls transport, bioavailability, and dissipation. For a set of 117 natural from 36 compound classes pH-dependent carbon–water distribution coefficient (Doc) was quantified using column chromatography approach under changing conditions regards to pH, ionic strength, major inorganic cation solution. could be assigned groups either hydrophobic partitioning or specific (complexation reactions, exchange) as dominating mechanisms. The complex interplay equally influenced by sorbate, sorbent, solution characteristics. High variability particularly observed presence Ca2+ resulting Doc being enhanced factor 10 when pH increased 4.5 6. Sorbates following this trend contain functional able form ternary complexes via aromatic moieties adjacent protonated N presumably stabilizing exchange reactions. Although stronger than predicted, investigated were highly mobile all considered conditions.

Sorption of organic chemicals to soil organic matter: influence of soil variability and pH dependence.

For modeling the sorption of organic compounds in soils it is typically assumed that the organic carbon/water partitioning coefficient (Koc) of neutral organic chemicals can be treated as a constant property that remains unaffected by the type of soil organic matter as well as pH in the soil solution. Here the validity of these assumptions is evaluated with a large and diverse experimental data...

Modeling and predicting competitive sorption of organic compounds in soil.

Binary systems consisting of 1,2-dichlorobenzene (12DCB) + competitor were investigated over a range of concentrations of competitor in three natural sorbents with distinct characteristics. Two models, the ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) and the potential theory (Polanyi-based multisolute model), widely used in the prediction of multisolute sorption equilibrium from single-solute data, we...

Effect of organic carbon and pH on soil sorption of sulfamethazine.

Batch sorption of sulfamethazine was conducted using five soils with organic carbon (OC) contents ranging from 0.1% to 3.8% and solution pHs ranging from 5.5 to 9. Sorption of sulfamethazine was found to be impacted by OC, soil surface area and soil solution pH, with higher K(d) values for soils with higher OC and lower K(d) values as the pH increased. However, OC was found to be the more domin...
